Welcome to the UGA Office of Sustainability (UGA OoS) Blogspot, a blog managed and written by students, faculty and staff who are engaged in sustainability across the university. Together we are working to create a model for healthy living on campus and beyond, meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. Our goal is a campus that functions as a living laboratory where sustainability is researched, taught, practiced and constantly refined; a place were students faculty and staff enhance the quality of life in their communities both physical and scholarly.

The goal of the blog is to discover and promote sustainability projects, events and programs across campus, sharing our successes and struggles. We hope this site will promote productive conversations that will help lead us to a sustainable future. Please join us, share you comments, and let’s build a sustainable campus together.

Food for thought: a weekend with the Southeast Youth Food Activist Summit

One hundred fifty college students from seventeen universities throughout the Southeast convened in
Athens, Georgia on February 11-13, 2011 to talk real food at the Southeast Youth Food Activist Summit.
The Summit is one of many taking place across the nation, all held by the Real Food Challenge, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to shifting 20% of university dining dollars towards real food by 2020 - approximately $1 billion. Real food is food that truly nourishes producers, consumers, communities, and the earth--it’s fair, humane, community-based, and ecologically sound.

Throughout the course of the weekend, students were able to choose from 22 different empowering workshops on subjects spanning from farm worker justice to urban agriculture in Atlanta to federal initiatives on obesity prevention. Some attendees were also able to get their hands dirty by traveling to local, sustainably operated farms for field experiences. The event featured numerous local culinary delights, and the generosity of many Athens businesses echoed the very spirit of the event.

Yet a weekend can impact so much more than just three days - UGA students are taking inspiration from SYFAS to whole new level, and harnessing the post conference energy to start a new group called Real Food UGA. This newly unified group of students will strive to change the way we think about food at UGA. As Georgia’s flagship land grant institution, it is time to work together to encourage our university to buy food that benefits our local environment, economy, and community.
